Stage 1: Application

Your first step in the process is to complete an application online though Mackay Regional Council vacancies. You will need access to a computer (not a tablet or smartphone) and have an email address.

You will also need to submit:

  • a cover letter
  • a resume
  • a copy of your latest school results/highest education, qualifications/licences
  • provide details of previous work experience
  • provide at least two current and contactable referees.

If you have applied for more than one position you will need to ensure each cover letter outlines your reasons for applying for the relevant position.

Stage 2: Shortlisting

Applicants will be notified on the status of their application either by email or phone.

Applicants who have been shortlisted will be invited to participate in the assessment centre and interview process.

Stage 3: Interview

The next stage in the process, for those who are successful, is to be invited to attend an interview.

Interviews with Mackay Regional Council are conducted by a panel of three (3) who represent different aspects of council.

Interview questions will be behaviourally based and your responses should include relevant examples that outline demonstrated ability and/or experience.  Remember to do your research on Mackay Regional Council, the position you are interviewing for and be ready to tell us about you.

Stage 4: Reference checks

You will be asked to provide us with the names and contact details of two (2) referees who can tell us about your school and/or work performance and experience. At the interview, we will seek your permission to speak with designated referees in relation to your performance as it relates to the position and your character.

NOTE: Make sure you have checked the contact details of any referees you provide.

Stage 5: Pre-employment medical

If you have been successful at the interview stage, you'll also be asked to complete a pre-employment medical examination (including drug and alcohol testing) with our preferred supplier. This medical will ensure that you are fit for the work involved with the position you have applied for as well as ensuring Mackay Regional Council does not place you in an unsafe environment due to any medical condition you may have.

Final Stage: Appointment

If you're successful, we will phone you and offer you the apprenticeship or traineeship confirming your start date and time. Following verbal confirmation, and acceptance, of your apprenticeship or traineeship a formal Letter of Offer will be sent to you.

We will also prepare your employment pack and you'll be required to complete our induction program to help you become more familiar with our organisation. You will be required to sign your training contract with our Australian Apprenticeship Support Network. Once that's completed, your apprenticeship or traineeship will begin.
