Water notices issued

Water usage notices covering the six months from October to March have now been issued.

Water and Sewerage portfolio councillor Frank Gilbert reminded residents that this period was typically higher than the previous due to the hot, dry weather.

“When comparing your charges it’s important to check them against the same billing period as last year, not your last bill,” he said.

“This bill is usually higher for most as it covers the summer months when outdoor watering is at its peak.”

Cr Gilbert said although this was our peak consumption period, overall consumption had dropped by six per cent when compared to the same period last year.

“Residents seem to be more aware of the water restrictions and the need to cut water use, which is great to see,” he said.

Council’s automatic meter reading technology has also played a role in reducing consumption, identifying more than 2100 potential customer leaks throughout this billing period.

“The automatic meter reading technology has now been installed on more than 25,000 meters throughout the region, successfully recording over half a million reads per day,” Cr Gilbert said.

“This has allowed us to identify and notify customers of potential leaks almost instantaneously that once would have gone unnoticed,” he said.

“The average leak during this period was recorded at 39 litres per hour and the largest at 1000 litres per hour costing a massive $50 per day.”

Cr Gilbert encouraged residents to continue to be conscious about their water use and remember that the current water restrictions remain in place.

Payment of water notices is due on June 13 and can be made at any of council’s client service centres or online at mackay.qld.gov.au.
