Council supporting Agritourism Field Day

The field day, to be held at Freckle Farm at Eton, is one of a series of three Agritourism Field Days being held in the region.

Tourism and Economic Development portfolio councillor Greg Martin said agritourism was an opportunity to diversify and value add to farm businesses.

"It could provide an alternative or additional income stream and a succession plan for keeping family on the farm,'' Cr Martin said.

"Agritourism includes the concept of paddock to plate but can also be extended to other tourism opportunities, such as on-farm tours, accommodation, dining and entertainment,'' he said.

"Local farmers, producers and rural landholders are encouraged to attend.

"They'll be able to listen to and learn from experienced local producers who are already on a path to developing food or agritourism as part of their farm business."

Attendees will also be able to register for a new Business Development Program which involves six full-day workshops held over a three-month period.

The field days are part of a regional project funded by partners, including Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday councils, Mackay Tourism, Whitsunday Marketing and Development, Bowen Gumlu Growers Association and the Department of Tourism, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games.

Cr Martin said agritourism also offered opportunities for small communities.

"Agritourism provides visitors and locals the opportunity to see how a farm operates, experience the food and enjoy the natural environment."

The Agritourism Field Days are being held across the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region this month.

The Mackay field day was originally going to be held at The Leap but has been transferred to Eton.  It will be held at Freckle Farm, 247 Olletts Road on Wednesday, February 18, from 9am to 3pm.

Registration is from 8.30am to 9am and the cost is $30, including morning tea and lunch.

Numbers are limited and anyone wanting to attend must RSVP online at www.dsdip.qld.gov.au/agritourism

The date for RSVPs for the Eton field day has been extended until Monday, February 16.

The Whitsunday field day is being held at Whitsunday Gold Coffee, just north of Proserpine, on Monday, February 16. The Isaac field day is at Clermont on Friday, February 20.
