Levee repairs will reduce flood risk

Council will begin work on the Pioneer River Flood Levee repairs on Nelson Street in October.

The work involves re-establishing an armour rock levee which has been damaged over time.

The levee face has become eroded and if it is not repaired it will cause further erosion of underlying soils on the river bank and put this location at increased risk of flood damage from the Pioneer River system.

Local contractor CJD Investments was awarded the tender to complete the work on behalf of council at today’s council meeting.

Infrastructure and Services Committee chair Cr Karen May said CJD Investments was the right choice for the job.

“This project involves extensive interaction with the environment,” she said.

“Tidal activity and wet weather could impact the success of the project if these factors are not managed effectively.

“CJD Investments has extensive experience in both river levee works and tidal works in the Mackay region.

“Their knowledge and experience will help to reduce the risks associated with this project.

“We are lucky to have such competent and established businesses operating in our region that can deliver unique and complex projects such as this.”
