1) 2017 Macrossan & Amiet 71st Annual Mackay Eisteddfod

Sessions on daily until October 21

This long running, much loved Eisteddfod has been showcasing local Mackay talent for generations and the Mackay Eisteddfod Association are very proud of being able to show the world just how talented the local community is. Tickets are available from the MECC. Mega-pass and competitor passes are only available from the Eisteddfod Committee at 39 Gordon Street.

2) Movies in the Meadow

Friday, October 13 at 6.30pm and 8.45pm
Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens

Celebrate Friday, October 13 with a movie night at the Meadowlands Amphitheatre in the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens. Two movies to choose from (or stay for both!)

Free entry, popcorn, pizza and coffee will be available on site. The Gardens Friends Group will be hosting a raffle on the night.

3) Guided walks at the Botanic Gardens

Walks start at the Gardens Administration Building

As the weather starts to cool down it makes getting out and about a lot easier. Let us take you on free guided walking tour through the lush gardens and scenic lagoon for an informative morning stroll. They will run every Friday at 10am. 4) The Dark Arts: Shane Gibbs' Humanals come to life

Saturday, October 14, 7.30pm – 10.30pm
Artspace Mackay, 61 Gordon Street

Experience the best of the dark arts, music, food and wine. Local hair designer Shane Gibbs’ latest sculptural works blur the boundary between traditional hairdressing and art. He creates sculptural ‘looks’ from unconventional materials such as steel wool, pipes, wire and wooden skewers. The Dark Arts event sees these works come to life to walk amongst us in a surreal social performance event you won’t want to miss. Contact Artspace 4961 9722 for tickets, only $40 per person. Hosted by Australian Literacy Educator’s Association (ALEA), this free session aims to assist adults in helping babies and children with their reading and language development in the early years, at home and at school. Led by Chris Topfer, early year’s education expert and author of “Supporting literacy learning in the early years”.

New trading times for The Farmers' Market, will now be open from 7am until 11am at the Bluewater Quay on River Street in the Mackay City Centre. The market showcase our regions amazing produce giving farmers an opportunity to help grow our local food culture.

7) The Glenn Miller Orchestra

The Glenn Miller Orchestra is returning to Australian shores for the first time in two years! Known as a concert spectacular, The Glenn Miller Orchestra will be accompanied by The Moonlight Serenade Singers, The Swing Kittens and the Broadway Swing Sisters.  This concert is not to be missed! Take a journey down memory lane with the iconic hits of the 1940’s, such as Chattanooga Choo Choo, In the Mood, Tuxedo Junction, A String of Pearls, Moonlight Serenade, Little Brown Jug, Pennsylvania 6-5000. 8) Book your spot – Kids Art Club

Term four starts October 21 – November 25
Artspace Mackay

Renowned local artists deliver this rich six-week program of creative art for kids in two age groups. Each week they explore and respond to the exhibitions on show at Artspace Mackay through fun-filled art activities. They will learn new techniques and make art with all kinds of exciting creative art materials. The fee is $150 per child for six weeks and includes art materials each week.

9) ‘Botancia 2017- Useful Plants’ by Mackay Botanical Art Interest Group (B.A.I.G)

Colourful, curious and captivating flora is showcased in this botanical art exhibition where the artists use a range of techniques to portray their chosen subject. Opening hours are Wednesday to Friday 9am – 3pm and weekends 8am – 4pm.

> Humanics: Shane Gibbs - until October 29
Humanics presents a collection of hairpieces that reflect Shane Gibbs’ desire to blur the boundary between traditional hairdressing and art. Creating sculptural ‘looks’ from unconventional materials such as steel wool, pipes, wire and wooden skewers Gibbs playfully pushes these boundaries, revealing his fascination with form and the avant-garde.

Winner of the 2017 Artspace Mackay Foundation ‘Hands On’ Bursary, Bethany Cordwell is a rising talent in the field of fashion design, currently studying at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).


Global Grooves

Saturday, October 21 from 3pm – 9pm
Queens Park, Mackay

This one-day, open-air event is free to the public and is a celebration of the cultural diversity of the Mackay region. Known for its smorgasbord of cultural cuisines, colourful dances and live global music. A perfect family-friendly outing with entertainment running all afternoon and into the night.
