Brunch has plenty of “sax-appeal”

The Mackay Festival of Arts Friends of the MECC Jazz Brunch will be held in the MECC North Foyer on Sunday, July 28, from 11am to 1pm.

Cr Justin Englert said the feedback on the past few years from jazz aficionados was they wanted a more traditional jazz sound.

"Well, this year we've pulled out the big band - the Bluewater Big Band that is," he said.

"This creative ensemble is a collaboration of local musicians, teachers and music hobbyists who share a passion for jazz and big band playing.”

Bluewater Big Band lead alto saxophonist Helen Williams said the band was mostly made up of experienced music educators.

“We do it because we love playing music, love jazz and playing together helps to keep our skills sharp,” Ms Williams said.

“The band formed in 2018 and contains plenty of experience as well as a good spread of youth and exuberance,” she said.

“Our members range from their early 20s to late 60s.

“The band has five saxophonists, four trumpet players, three trombone players, a bass guitarist, drummer, pianist, guitarist and a guest vocalist or two.”

Ms Williams said the brunch crowd could look forward to a range of tunes from the 40s through to modern jazz standards and upbeat funk numbers.

“We have a bit of everything – from Glen Miller to modern hits by Gordon Goodwin and Michael Bublé. We’ve even put in a few dance numbers for the second half of the brunch, so people can get their groove on.”

Bluewater Big Band will be joined on stage by special guest vocalist Mr Jeremy Adams.
