Celebrating 30 years at Ken Burgess Display House
The 2018 Mackay Orchid Extravaganza is celebrating a huge milestone at this year’s event.
Mayor Greg Williamson said this year would mark the 30th anniversary of the Orchid House.
“Ken Burgess Display House was named after the original Queens Park curator, Ken Burgess, who was a keen orchid enthusiast and worked for Mackay City Council for more than 30 years,’’ he said.
“He supplied plants from his private collection which, combined with council’s own orchids, have grown to become one of the finest collections of its kind in Australia.”
Orchid Extravaganza, to be held on September 22 to 23, will kick off at 9am and an orchid auction will be held on both days at noon, with kids’ activities throughout the day.
Hundreds of species of orchids will be featured in displays created by council staff, local orchid societies and orchid growers for the Ken Burgess Display House.
People who attend will learn the secrets from local orchid growing experts, with free orchid workshops and information sessions being held on both days.
They will also be able to increase their orchid and plant collection, with more than 20 vendors on site for the weekend.
“To celebrate the historic occasion, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the entrance of Orchid House on the Saturday morning to officially open the event,” Cr Williamson said.
While the main event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, the spectacular orchid displays will stay open to the public and community groups on Monday, September 24, from 10am to 3pm.
ABC Tropical North have shown they still have a green thumb by once again supporting the event as the main sponsor in 2018.
The Mackay District Orchid Society and Pioneer Orchid & Plant Association have also proudly supported the event again this year.
Entry to the Ken Burgess Display House is by gold coin donation, with donations going toward restocking Orchid House for future generations to enjoy.
