Council pools scheduled for upgrades and maintenance

There will be staggered closures of several council aquatic facilities over the cooler months for scheduled maintenance.

Memorial, Bluewater Lagoon and Pioneer Swim Centres have been earmarked for detailed maintenance schedules.  Pioneer will also be fitted with a heating system over the closure.

Sarina and Mirani pools will close first from this Friday (April 19), Memorial will close for the month of May (starting May 1), Pioneer will close from June 1 and the Bluewater Lagoon will close from July 15.

The new aquatic centre at the Mackay ARC will remain open.

Cr Ross Gee said council would be making the most of the closures to tackle some issues raised by the public and perform upgrades.

“We have a detailed maintenance list for Memorial Pool that we will work through over the closure,” Cr Gee said.

“Memorial is getting a new heating unit, we are repainting the 50m pool shell and concourse, and we are inspecting and fixing tiles throughout the facility,” he said. “The bathrooms and amenities are also scheduled for repairs and an aesthetic upgrade.”

Cr Gee said when Pioneer Swim Centre reopened on Saturday, June 16, it would have a heated pool thanks to a new heating system being installed over the closure.

“This will give swimmers north of the river an attractive option over the cooler months,” he said.
