Councillor adopts a fur-ever friend

After a year and a half without a pet, Cr Laurence Bonaventura has decided to add a new member to his family.

Last month he adopted Macca, an 18 month-old cattle dog cross, from the Mackay Animal Management Centre (AMC).

Cr Bonaventura said he would recommend adoption to anyone considering buying a pet.

“There are so many animals that need homes, and giving a dog a second chance was something that appealed to me ,” he said.

“I’ve always loved cattle dogs; my previous dog was a blue cattle dog kelpie cross who sadly passed away in December 2015 at 14 years of age.

“When I saw Macca I knew he would fit right in with my family.

“He’s a very active dog and we have a large property so he has plenty of space to run around and explore.”

Cr Bonaventura said responsible pet ownership was something he took seriously.

“When I adopted Macca, we took him straight to the vet and gave him a check-up and had him desexed, which is a requirement of adopting any animal from the AMC,” he said.

“As part of being a responsible pet owner it is also important to ensure your pet is registered and microchipped.

“The Pet Registration Day coming up later this month is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of discount registration, microchipping and other useful pet advice.”

Council’s Pet Registration Day will be held on council’s front lawn on Saturday, July 29, from 9am until noon.

There will be stalls, the RSPCA Education Mobile Unit (EMU) van and plenty of giveaways including dog toys and leads.
