Gas bottle causes fire at recycling facility

Council is reminding residents to not put gas bottles in their recycling bins.

The call comes after a small gas cylinder made its way through the sorting system and onto the metal baler at the Materials Recovery Facility at Paget yesterday.

It caused a small explosion and minor fire, which staff were able to contain with a fire extinguisher.

Luckily, there were no injuries to staff or damage to the equipment.

Engineering and Commercial Infrastructure director Jason Devitt said for the safety of everyone residents should only put recyclable materials in their yellow-lidded recycling bin.

“Gas bottles and marine flares are hazardous material that can cause fires and explosions in the rubbish trucks and at the recycling facility,” he said.

“You can dispose of your unwanted gas bottles at the Incredable Tip Shop and your marine flares at the Mackay and North Mackay Queensland Fire and Rescue Service stations.”
