Know your zone

Motorists are advised that changes have been made to the dual-purpose taxi and loading zone in the centre of Wood Street.

The zone was signed as a loading zone between the hours of 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8.30am to midday on Saturdays. All other times it was a designated taxi zone.

However, taxi drivers approached council with concerns that the zone was being used after hours by private vehicles.

Community Engagement Committee Chair Cr Fran Mann said the zone has been divided into two sections to avoid confusion.

“One section will remain a loading zone during the signposted times and the other will be a full-time taxi zone,” Cr Mann said.

“This will allow taxi drivers to safely drop off customers in the city centre at any time of the day without causing disruption to traffic flow.

“It will also provide an additional area for taxis to wait if the taxi rank in Wood Street, near Escape Travel, is full at peak hours.

“The changes will ensure that taxis won’t have to worry about motorists misinterpreting the loading zone and parking in their designated area outside the allocated hours.”

Council’s local laws officers will be monitoring the site as part of their routine parking inspections.
