Libraries to collect lids for kids

Mackay Regional Council Libraries are collecting your plastic lids to help children in need.

Following a call from residents to find an alternative to sending lids to landfill, council libraries has nominated itself as a collection point for the Lids 4 Kids initiative in Mackay.

Lids 4 Kids collects the lids for Envision, an Australian not-for-profit organisation that trains disadvantaged people to use 3D printers to make mobility aids for child amputees.

Councillor Karen May said it was fantastic to see residents being so proactive about their waste.

“After council posted on Facebook reminding residents that our Materials Recovery Facility was unable to handle small lids for recycling, we were overwhelmed by how many people responded looking for ways to reduce their waste,” Cr May said.

“We are pleased to provide a collection point at our libraries for this fantastic initiative.”

Residents are encouraged to drop their clean plastic lids (recycle codes 2 and 4), including milk bottle, soft drink and water bottle lids (no pop-up lids), as well as plastic bread clips to any of our library branches in Mackay, Mirani, Walkerston and Sarina.

These lids will be forwarded on to Anything Environmental, at Paget, who are also a local collection point and Mackay’s regional storage facility.
