Mackay athletes score big from Commonwealth Games

Our regional athletes will be able to train on a level playing field with the best in the world thanks to an exciting equipment windfall.

The Mackay Regional Sporting Precinct has scored oodles of hurdles and thousands of dollars worth of equipment thanks to the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program.

This program will see regional centres scooping up the near-new equipment used during the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April.

Mayor Greg Williamson said Mackay had been a big winner.

“Council applied for these assets in late 2017, competing against bids from other organisations across the state,” Cr Williamson said.

“On the strength of our plans to use these assets for community sport, we were successful in securing them for the precinct,” he said.

“It’ll set this precinct up to a standard that will rival precincts in any of the capital cities.

“It also means we will have the equipment to hold athletics events at the highest level and all we have to pay is the shipping costs.”

Cr Williamson said the windfall included items like 120 hurdles; high jump beds, stands and bars; starters stands; discus and hammer throwing nets; bench seating; and even a shotput return system.

“We are getting almost 200 items of premium quality Commonwealth Games equipment that will be stored onsite at the precinct and will be available for use by any groups who wish to use them for events,” he said.

“That’s a huge win for local athletes and our ability to attract athletics events to our region.”

Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said the Legacy initiative was geared towards all sporting levels from recreational players and social sports groups, to elite clubs and serious competitors.

“We’re a sports mad state and building on the excitement of the Games, this initiative can support communities and individuals to be more active, happier and healthier,” she said.
