Mackay to host largest regional multi-sport event
About 4000 competitors and officials, as well as thousands of spectators, will converge on Mackay in May for the 2018 Mackay City Auto Group NQ Games.
The North Queensland Games are the largest, regularly run, multi-sport event in regional Australia and more than 30 sports have already signed on for the 2018 games.
This biennial event, which will run from May 5 to May 7, was officially launched today at the Mackay Sports Expo and Sign-on Day.
Mayor Greg Williamson said hosting the games was a privilege for our region.
“This games gives us a chance to shine, in and out of the sporting arena,” Cr Williamson said.
“Not only can we show off our sporting infrastructure and local talent, but also our beautiful region,” he said.
“We will be encouraging all the travelling athletes and spectators to get out and explore the natural wonders and fantastic entertainment and dining options available in our region.”
Australian Jillaroos Rugby League World Cup-winning co-captain Renae Kunst, official ambassador for the 2018 Mackay City Auto Group NQ Games, was a guest speaker at the launch.
Cr Williamson said it was tremendous to have a Mackay sporting hero like Renae represent our games.
“Renae has fond memories of competing in the NQ Games as a junior netballer, so to have her back as ambassador after all the success she’s achieved on the Rugby League field is a privilege,” he said.
North Queensland Sports Foundation CEO Stephen Farrell said registrations were now open for athletes.
“With 30 sports – from tenpin bowling to tennis, shooting to soccer, baton twirling to beach volleyball – the list of sports on offer is impressive and there will be a sport among our sporting hosts to suit most people,” Mr Farrell said.
“Whether you want to start your sporting career or qualify for the Olympics, the NQ Games has something for everyone – just head to nqsports.com.au for more information and registration.”
Mr Farrell said the event wouldn’t be possible without the fantastic support provided by sponsors.
“Mackay City Auto Group have been amazing as our major sponsor and I’d also like to thank Mackay Regional Council, Tourism and Events Queensland, Followmont Transport and CQUniversty for their support,” he said.
