Sarina Sugar Shed in the national spotlight

The Sarina Sugar Shed is the toast of the country, after snaring a silver at the 2016 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Darwin.

The Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, which recognise and celebrate businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to quality tourism products and experiences, is the pinnacle event for the industry and for the first time in its 32 year history it was held in Darwin.

Sarina Sugar Shed represented Queensland in two categories, securing a silver in the Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Brewers category. The winner was  Seppeltsfield Estate Winery.

Chair of Infrastructure and Services Committee Cr Karen May, who attended the awards with Coordinator Glenys Mansfield, described the result as fantastic.

“This has been a ten year dream for the council-owned facility and to be put in the national spotlight is recognition of the work of the volunteers,” she said.

181 tourism products and experiences competed through a rigorous evaluation process, to take home gold, silver and bronze awards across 25 product categories.

“It is fantastic achievement for all businesses to reach finalist level at the Australian Tourism Awards, and so for those taking home a placing, it is a true mark of their professionalism and commitment to quality visitor experiences.” Australian Tourism Awards Chairman, Daniel Gschwind, said.

Ibis Mackay at the Mackay Airport clinched a silver as well in the Standard Accommodation category.

Mr Gschwind said it was fantastic to see the awards being spread across the State and being recognised for excellence in tourism.

“Tourism is thriving in Queensland with visitors exploring all corners of the State, supporting regional employment and community growth – there is now more than 233,000 Queenslanders employed in the tourism industry.”

Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones said the results highlighted the strength of Queensland’s world-class tourism industry.

“I am so proud of all the Queensland winners and nominees recognised at the Australian Tourism Awards tonight and I congratulate them for their outstanding contributions to our tourism industry."
