Skatescape 2018

This is a youth and family friendly community event combining Art, Music and Sports. This growing and popular event promotes free expression, creativity, and acceptance in our community. Art deck workshop, learn to skate, movie night - Smurfs & Spider-Man (5.30pm start), basketball challenge, skateboarding comp, and neon family disco. Money raised during the event will be donated to the P&F Slade Point School.

Skate Titans Mackay will kick off on Sunday 3pm.  Registration open 2:30pm $5 entry and up to $500 prize money.  This is also a sanction skateboarding comp and a state titles qualifier for Rumble On The Reef States Championships held at the new Sugar Bowl Mackay park near the PCYC.

River Sessions in a boutique festival that has been sitting on the bench since 2014. With the festival starting out in 2008, it has left quite a positive hold on the punters of Mackay showcasing some amazing talent like Hilltop Hoods, Sticky Fingers, Lorde, Illy, Thundamentals, Grinspoon, 360 and many more. With its return in 2018 and the very positive feedback from the Mackay music lovers, River Sessions is coming back as a one stage festival showcasing some of the biggest artists in the country along with an abundance of food option to melt your tastebuds away! The play Around the World in 80 Days is an epic, funny, madcap adaptation of the classic novel by Jules Verne. The story opens on Tuesday October 1, 1872 at 11.57pm...and 30 seconds...with a sinister robbery taking place. Big Ben chimes midnight and within minutes the central London bank is 40,000 pounds poorer.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.  All children aged 5 to 12 in the Mackay region are invited to engage in Aboriginal dance and language and help celebrate NAIDOC Week with us.

Children will:

  • Learn about the local aboriginal culture and language, the meaning behind Welcome to Country, history of the didgeridoo and connection to land and animals
  • Learn to dance and sing in language to favourite children’s nursery rhymes
  • Play games incorporating animal moves and the didgeridoo
  • Share the story “How the bush turkey lost his egg” with special guest Berky the Brush Turkey!
  • Watch a performance by Diranga Gangali Aboriginal Dancers.

The workshop is proudly presented by Deb Netuschil, Yuibera Elder and the Diranga Gangali Aboriginal Dancers. Bookings essential and can be made online from Monday, June 26.

If you’re looking for to get active these holidays, why not bring the family (and your dog) down for a walk around the Gardens? Follow the signs to do your 10,000 Steps program or why not come for a walk or a bike ride along our shared pathways. Don’t forget dogs are welcome in the gardens and must be on a leash at all times. Dog waste bags and bins are located at several locations throughout the gardens. For more information, pick up a 10,000 Steps brochure from Gardens administration.

Drop-in to the gallery anytime during the July school holidays to enjoy free art and craft. Inspired by our local coastal environment, three Indigenous artists, Luke Mallie, Ed Rigby and Charlie Wicking have designed a collection of art activities including a paste-up mural, beach sculptures, drawing and collage for the whole family to enjoy. Parental supervision is required, and you can stay for a few minutes, a few hours, and visit as many times as you’d like. It’s free and no bookings are required, so join us at Artspace for lots of fun. This event coincides with NAIDOC week, so be sure to look for other celebrations on throughout the region.
