Sun to shine at Sports Expo

Despite the wet weather, the sun will shine at the Sports Expo and Sign-on Day this weekend with two Gold Coast Suns players confirmed as special guests.

Sports Expo and Sign-on Day Committee chair Cr Kevin Casey said the Suns’ involvement was great news for the popular event.

“The Mackay region is a proud supporter of the Gold Coast Suns AFL Women’s team as part of the Invest Mackay Events Attraction Program,’’ he said.

“We’re very excited that women’s players Holly Mirfield and Emma Aeschlimann will be in attendance.”

Other special guests will include the region’s state league teams, such as Mackay’s National Premier League (NPL) football (soccer team) Magpies Crusaders United, rugby league’s Mackay Cutters and basketball’s Meteors and Meteorettes.

There will be more than 100 sport and recreation clubs under one roof and attendees will have the chance to meet some of their local sporting heroes and grab an autograph.

Presented by major sponsor Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, this annual one-stop shop for locals looking to get active with a sport, club or recreational pursuit, always draws a large crowd.

This event allows residents, both new to sport and experienced, to see what’s on offer and make an educated decision when picking a new sport or recreational activity.

Throughout the day, the active zones will include demonstrations in boxing, dance, Sporting Wheelies, Rugby Tots, gymnastics, AFL and more.

With two active zones operating, the action will be non-stop.

This event is a Mackay Regional Council initiative, powered by major sponsor Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, Optus, Hail Creek Open Cut Glencore and Star 101.9.
