Which bin do you put it in?

Do pizza boxes and junk mail go into your yellow-lidded recycling bin?

To improve recycling, council has joined forces with local business Porters Mitre 10 and is running a ‘Test your Recycling Knowledge’ Facebook competition.

The competition will run this week during National Recycling Week (November 13 to 19).

Those who can tell us correctly which items belong in their yellow-lidded recycling bin will go into the draw to win a $1000 Porters Mitre 10 gift voucher.

Infrastructure and Services Committee chair Cr Karen May said the competition encouraged residents to think about their recycling habits and to make the necessary changes to improve their recycling efforts.

“In 2016-17, our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) received 8967 tonnes of recyclable material, 35 tonnes less than the previous year, and 1429 tonnes of contaminated material, Cr May said.

“I believe as a community we can recycle more of our everyday items, and dispose of our waste correctly.”

In addition to the Facebook competition, council will be running a two-week TV advertising campaign to educate the community about the benefits of recycling and touching on items that people are unsure about.

Tips will also be uploaded onto council’s Facebook page during the competition to dispel some of the recycling myths and to help residents recycle right.

Porters Mitre 10 Marketing and Sales Manager Lauren Reck said Porters Mitre 10 was excited to support council’s initiative.

“Recycling is everyone’s business and education is an important step in working towards a better and more sustainable future for our region and our planet.
If we bind together as a community today, we’re well on our way to making a positive impact for our region and for generations to come,” Ms Reck said.

The Test your Recycling Knowledge Competition will start on Mackay Regional Council’s Facebook Page from Monday, November 13, and run until midnight Sunday, November 19.

The competition is open to Mackay residents only. Terms and conditions apply.
