Steal the spotlight and steer the wheel in Mackay’s Bobcat Ballet

A standing ovation was the deciding factor which will see the return of Mackay’s Bobcat Ballet in 2010 - and Mackay Regional Council is giving you the chance to be part of this on-stage spectacular.

Bobcat drivers (and general rev-enthusiasts) wanting to branch out and add some heavy rock beats to their day are encouraged to apply, with those selected to be part of the fantastic Mackay Region Festival of Arts activities.

Mackay Regional Council’s Festival & Events producer, David Gerrand said last year’s inaugural Bobcat Ballet was a quirky production with plenty of testosterone and large heavy machinery.

“BlueScope Lysaght has already come on board as naming rights sponsor which means that the event will be even bigger and more fun than last year,” Mr Gerrand said.

Mr Gerrand said he was looking for skidsteerers, mini and maxi excavators, with drivers, to be part of the 2010 Bobcat Ballet performance team.

“Last year we had five operators and this year we have plans for lots more.”

Those involved will be required to attend two rehearsals and then the big opening performance night on Saturday, July 10.

“The dance will be performed to a driving beat of Australian and International rock ‘n’ roll at the local Festival of Arts and potentially at the Queensland Mining Exhibition,” Mr Gerrand said.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for all bobcat men and women out there to get their workmates together and have some fun.”

The performance will go for about 15 minutes, as part of the opening event at the Mackay Showgrounds to be directed by award winning director, Angela Chaplin.

The Mackay Region Festival of Arts, July 10 – 25, is an annual Mackay community celebration that aims to enhance the lifestyle of the Mackay region through the arts.

“The Bobcat Ballet will once again be a huge drawcard at the two-week long event,” Mr Gerrand said.

Local companies who either use or hire bobcats/excavators, and are looking for a fabulous team-bonding exercise, are encouraged to apply.

To express your interest or for further information contact David Gerrand on 4961 9763 or email david.gerrand@mackay.qld.gov.au. Expressions of interest close on Thursday, May 6 at 5pm.
