Budget 2011-12 – Capital projects provide benefits to region
Building stronger communities and enhancing our lifestyle are provided in a $119 million Capital Works budget.
Council will invest $85 million on Roads, Water, and Sewerage infrastructure in 2011-12 budget, but a number of projects that will help enhance the liveability of the region will also be given priority.
Parks and Natural Environment portfolio councillor Ross Walker said a number of rural parks and playgrounds would benefit from $2.2 million in capital works.
“A new toilet facility will be constructed at the River Street Boat Ramp, improved access to the Eton Pony Club and playgrounds at Koumala, Grasstree Beach and Northern Beaches will receive upgrades,” he said.
Council has set aside a further $800,000 to complement last year’s $1.1 million for the initial establishment of the Meadowlands precinct at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens, which includes the development of an Outdoor Performance area.
A significant amount of flood repair work is scheduled for the City Centre, totalling about $3 million.
Economic Development portfolio councillor Dave Perkins said work would be completed on Wood, Victoria and Tennyson streets.
“We remain committed to rejuvenating the city centre and this work will improve safety and the connectivity in the area.”
Cr Perkins said another $400,000 would be spent on footpath reconstruction.
Community Halls and the Memorial, Pioneer and Mirani Swim Centres will benefit from ongoing upgrades and new technology will be utilised at local libraries to allow customers to self check out books.
Breakdown of Capital funding in 2011-12 Budget:
• $34.3 million on roads and drainage work
• $28 million on wastewater infrastructure
• $23 million Water infrastructure
• $10.6 million on Waste infrastructure
• $6.4 million Plant and Equipment (Trucks, machinery, computer technology etc)
• $3.3 million on Community Facilities
• $2.2 million Parks, Playgrounds and Beach facilities
