Accommodation boost for CBD

The mostly vacant site at 41 Macalister Street is set to be transformed from an inner city ‘Laundromat site’ into a serviced apartment complex and commercial premises.

Mackay Regional Councillors today approved a request to change the existing development approval at 41 Macalister Street from a multi-level, hotel style development to 129 multiple dwelling units, catering shop and commercial premise.

Planning and Development portfolio councillor Diane Hatfield said due to economic forces and market factors the new owners requested a change to the approved development to meet the needs of Mackay’s growing population.

“The Mackay Regional Council Local Government Area is one of the fastest growing in Queensland with an annual growth rate of 2.9 per cent and positive growth forecast over the next two decades heading towards a population of 200,000 people,” Cr Hatfield said.

“By removing the office component and allowing the units to be redesigned to be self contained for more flexible use by both permanent and short term/overnight accommodation will meet the current market demand.”

Cr Hatfield said the proposal is a positive step for Mackay, supporting the revitalisation of the City Centre.

“The site is ideally situated, adjacent to the MECC and council’s Civic Precinct, 400m walking distance to specialty shops (Sydney Street Markets) and a couple of blocks from the City Centre.”

‘The proposal will enhance the role of the MECC, alleviating the pressure to accomodate visitors,” Cr Hafield said.

Mackay Regional Council approved the new development application at 41 Macalister Street as the application complies with all council requirements.
