Neighbour Day this Sunday will help build a safer, more inclusive place to live
Get to know who lives next door to you this weekend on Sunday, March 27 as part of national celebrations for Neighbour Day, Australia’s annual celebration of community.
Held on the last Sunday in March every year, Neighbour Day is the perfect time to say thanks for being a great neighbour.
Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said Neighbour Day is all about bringing together the people next door, across the street or on the next farm for a barbecue, cuppa or quick chat over the fence.
“Over the past few years our region has felt the effects of natural disasters, and I believe going through and experiencing these types of situations, it has in fact brought our community closer together,” she said.
“The Mackay region has a strong community spirit and we are extremely fortunate to have a large quantity of residents who are willing to lend a hand to their neighbours, friends and family when they need it most.”
Residents can download a free Neighbour Day promotional kit at www.neighbourday.org to assist with planning, the kit includes a ‘how-to’ guide, invitations, name tags and posters.
Cr May said as we all live busy lifestyles, it can be hard to take the time to stop, however, with celebrations such as this Sunday, it provides the perfect opportunity for us to make the effort to greet, meet and build stronger relationships with fellow neighbours.
“So whether you’re planning to hold a morning tea, barbecue or a party for those on your street, take the time to enjoy the company of those around you.”
