Think Smart, Plant Smart - a timely reminder this storm season

As we enter the storm season council in partnership with Ergon Energy is reminding residents to think before you plant as unsuitable trees can cause havoc.

Parks and Natural Environment portfolio councillor Ross Walker said unfortunately, much of the damage caused by storms and cyclones involve large unsuitable trees being planted too close to buildings and powerlines.

“To reduce the risk of injury to people and property, council, with the assistance of Ergon Energy and Greening Australia has produced a brochure, Think Smart, Plant Smart that lists plants that are suitable for planting under and around powerlines.”

“The Think Smart, Plant Smart brochure identifies a number of plant species that will not grow taller than Ergon’s stipulated maximum height of four metres for plants growing under powerlines within the council area.”

“By choosing the right plants, this will ensure that the trees won’t grow into powerlines, potentially disrupting the power supply to you and your neighbours and bring live powerlines to the ground in storms or windy conditions.”

Cr Walker said planting anything else near powerlines is just not worth the risk.

“Don’t risk the safety of you and your family. Choose the right plant height for planting under and near powerlines.”

A copy of the Think Smart, Plant Smart brochure is available at council’s Customer Service Centres or can be downloaded from the Botanic Gardens webpage www.mackayregionalbotanicgardens.com.au.
