Tourism funding for Finch Hatton Gorge
Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Minister Jan Jarratt has announced Mackay Regional Council will recieve a $46,000 grant to improve access and parking at Finch Hatton Gorge.
"Finch Hatton Gorge is one of Mackay's most popular natural tourist attractions, with lush tropical rainforests, swimming holes and waterfalls," Ms Jarratt said.
"The council will receive the funding under the Bligh Government's Minor Tourism Infrastructure Grants program which provides financial support to local government authorities and regional tourism and community organisations to help cover the cost of tourism projects.
"This project will improve visitors' experience and further enhance the gorge's reputation by improving access and also interpretive signage.
"Council will use the grant to improve existing infrastructure, build and install new facilities to improve the aesthetics and usability of the gorge, as well as promote local tourism-based businesses."
"The grants program has helped regions throughout Queensland which rely heavily on the drive tourism market to deliver infrastructure that encourages travellers to stop and explore our towns and regions."
Ms Jarratt said project applications were required to have a drive tourism theme, catering for holiday makers and overseas travellers, as well as the campervan market.
This year's funding was also available to assist recovery efforts by covering some of the costs to repair, upgrade or replace damaged tourism infrastructure, and revitalise tourism destinations.
The program was part of the State Government's $1.8 million election commitment to support the development of minor tourism infrastructure across Queensland.
