Leaf-Litter

‘Leaf Litter’ Exhibition - A collection by Maya Harrison

Lagoons Gallery and Café
4 May – 29 May 2011

Leaf litter in reality is a collection of decaying leaves, twigs, petals and bark, including all the bits that fall from plants and creatures. Leaf litter is the home of thousands of small animals and insects, as well as millions of bacteria and fungi. The interactions within leaf litter help to maintain soil fertility and structure.

Maya’s ‘Leaf Litter’ exhibition is also a collection, not only of some of its features, but also a variety of different mediums used to depict the delicates, patterns and surprises we often walk over. Maya has also used the exhibition as a venue to highlight intricacies of the plant biology, ecosystems, leaf shapes and the purpose of Latin naming , just to subtlety educate the community while viewing the Artworks.

Garden Friends Planting Bee

Saturday, May 21

One of the many regular activities the Friends of the Gardens group participate in.

The Garden Friends will be planting in the Sarina / Proserpine Gardens at their next Planting Bee on Saturday, May 21.

This is a great opportunity to come along and learn more about the types of plants which grow in the Sarina and Proserpine areas of our Central Queensland Coastal Bioregion. Planting Bees also offer all budding green thumbs a chance to get their hands dirty and help the Gardens extend their plant collection.

All Planting Bees commence at 9am sharp; with a “planting induction” and participants are asked to remember to slip, slop, slap and wear closed in footwear.

For more information, contact the Botanic Gardens on 4952 7300 or email botanic@mackay.qld.gov.au
