Equitable access
Mackay Regional Council has committed to the provision of equitable access to all council provided and council sponsored services, facilities, information, buildings and places for all residents and visitors. This commitment will provide increased opportunities and promote a more inclusive community.
To this end, council has developed:
- a Good Access guide
- an Access and Equity Policy
- a Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) Action Plan (in the process of being implemented)
- an Equitable Access Checklist as a planning tool for all council sponsored community events, festivals, etc. The checklist is available for use by community organisations planning community events, performances, etc who would like some guidance in providing equitable access.
Council has also formally committed to the Companion Card in all council facilities (for any service, event, performance, etc) which involves an admission charge. This commitment extends to any community organisation who receives a grant or other financial sponsorship from the council specifically for community events, performances, etc which involve an admission charge.
The Companion Card Program has been introduced to support people with a disability who have a lifelong need for attendant care support to participate in community activities and attend venues.
