Budget invests in Mackay’s community

The 2019-20 council budget will invest another $1 million to help attract events and conferences to the Mackay region.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the Invest Mackay Events and Conference Attraction Program had been a huge success in recent years.

“This funding initiative has helped secure major events for our region, ranging from concerts to Women’s Big Bash League games,’’ Cr Williamson said.

“Those events improve the liveability for residents and provide an economic return for businesses throughout our region,’’ he said.

“There is no doubt our economy is picking up, with renewed business and investor confidence, and council has decided this economic stimulus measure is well worth continuing.”

Cr Williamson said the new budget also provided $300,000 for the Better Community Building Fund.

“Combined with $200,000 in Community Grants, that is a total of half-a-million dollars which will be available for not-for-profits and sporting groups to apply for,” he said.
