2017 Sister City Scholarship Program

This program provides students in years 10, 11 and 12 with a $1000 scholarship to be used towards the cost of travel on a student ambassador visit to Japan, including a week’s home stay in Matsuura.

The student group will be accompanied by two adult chaperones.

Tentative itinerary and costs:

* depart Mackay in the September school holidays 2017
* visit Tokyo (including one day Tokyo Disney pass)
* one week home stay in Matsuura (including some time spent at school)
* visit Kyoto (including sight seeing tour)
* approximate net cost after deduction of scholarship $2,000
(based on 2016 costs - could vary).

Benefits for students:

* exposure to a unique cultural experience
* opportunity to learn new life skills and make new friends
* opportunity to practise Japanese language skills.

To apply, students must:

  • be currently studying Japanese
  • have an exemplary behaviour record
  • be in years 10, 11 or 12 in 2017
  • complete the application form found on council’s website
  • on return, be prepared to provide a report to council detailing your experiences and what you got out of the visit to Matsuura
  • be willing to participate in fortnightly meetings leading up to the trip (frequency may change to weekly closer to departure date)
  • provide their latest school report with their application.

Applications should be finalised and submitted no later than midnight, Sunday 19, March, 2017.

Expressions of interest chaperone opportunity

As a chaperone, you will be required to:

  • Participate in the selection process of the 2017 Youth Ambassadors
  • Supervise the Youth Ambassadors throughout the duration of the tour
  • Plan the itinerary while in Tokyo and Kyoto.

To apply, chaperones must:

  • Be 18 years or over
  • Have travel experience
  • Have Japanese language skills
  • Have a Blue Card or be a registered teacher
  • Apply before: midnight, Sunday, February 12, 2017

Tour costs will be covered by Mackay Regional Council.
