Commercial loading zones

Commercial Loading Zones have been put in place to ensure that courier and trades vehicles are able to park and unload goods and supplies, to businesses in the CBD, in a safe and near location.

These are intended to provide short term parking only and most Commercial Loading Zones in Mackay have a maximum stay of 20 minutes only. If the location does not have the time written on the sign, then the vehicle is entitled to stay for 30 minutes. This rule applies to ordinary loading zones also.

Although the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995 outlines and limits the vehicles able to utilise these area, Mackay Regional Council Local Law No. 4 (Regulated Parking) 2005 further clarifies and permits additional vehicle types.

These are:

  • Any truck, van or utility built for the carrying of goods - and is permanently sign written (painted) or displays a magnetic or other sticker so as to clearly indicate to the local government that the vehicle is being used in connection with a commercial business
  • A passenger vehicle which has had the rear seat backs and seat belts removed
  • Any vehicle displaying a current Commercial Vehicle permit issued by this or any other Local Government Authority
  • The manner in which the vehicle is registered with Queensland Transport or other State/Territory Transport Authority has no bearing on whether the vehicle is permitted to use Commercial Loading Zones

It is important to note that the vehicle must fit this description but must also be loading or unloading goods. The vehicle may not park at these locations if the driver is conducting general business such as picking up or stopping for lunch, shopping, toilet breaks, picking up/dropping off passengers, etc.
