Funding and grants

Council is keen to encourage community involvement in the sustainable management of public land in the Mackay region. Funding from the Natural Environment Levy will be available each year to encourage partnerships between council and the community and provide opportunities for the sustainable management of public land.

Council welcomes submissions from the community regarding ideas for potential projects.  Successful projects will involve a partnership between the community and council to achieve project outcomes.

Projects must be undertaken on public land and be of benefit to the local environment and community.

Some examples of potential projects include:

  • Developing a brochure or interpretive signage about the natural environment
  • Weed control or planting projects in a local habitat area
  • Support for workshops
  • Field trips or demonstration projects focusing on local environmental issues

Project costs are between $3,000 and $15,000. A total of $25,000 is available each funding round. Funding rounds are held in February and August each year.

For more information, or to talk about your ideas for a potential project, contact the Natural Environment Coordinator.

Application and guidelines are located below:

Applications for the current round will be recieved until Monday 14th September 2009.

Please note: the Community Environmental Projects program is not a grants program, but rather an opportunity for council to work with the community to undertake projects that are determined to be high priority by the community.

Cheques will not be issued to applicants, but funding will be allocated for council to purchase project material such as plants, mulch, fencing materials etc.

It is anticipated that applicants will contribute their time on a volunteer basis to facilitate the project, for instance a community group may volunteer to plant seedlings supplied by council.
