Natural Environment Centre

The Mackay Natural Environment Centre in Swayne Street North Mackay is funded by the Natural Enviromnent Levy.

 Volunteers working in the nurseryThe Centre is a base from which members of the local community can take part in various environmental projects and initiatives which help to protect and restore Mackay's natural environment.  The main focus of the site is to encourage community involvement in environmental projects that work towards the health and care of the local catchment.

Volunteering

Volunteer working bees are held every Thursday and Friday from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.  If you would like more information, or are interested in attending, please contact Council's Natural Environment Officer.

Volunteer projects vary and include:

  • Wattle seedlings propagated at the Natural Environment Centreseed collection
  • propagation of indigenous plants
  • nursery maintenance tasks
  • weed control
  • revegetation and the development of community demonstration projects such as composting and water efficient gardens

Community volunteers, school groups and council staff regularly work at the Centre together.  Pioneer Catchment and Landcare Group are also based at the site.
