Lagoons Creek rehabilitation project

Major works are now complete at the Lagoons Creek rehabilitation project in West Mackay.

The project has been a result of the successful co-contribution efforts of Mackay Regional Council, Reef Catchments and the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Environmental consultants, Catchment Solutions, were engaged in the design and construction of the project. These works have seen the transformation of what was a previously weed infested paddock into two large wetland areas, including the installation of a number of rock ramp fishways. These works aim to restore the aquatic and terrestrial connectivity between the Pioneer River and the Lagoons with the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens.

Not only have the works seen a dramatic improvement in the overall aesthetics of the area, they will offer significant improvement in biodiversity, fish numbers and water quality.

A big thank you needs to go to all those who took part in recent volunteer efforts on National Tree Day and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Future Leaders Eco Challenge, which has  seen thousands of plants planted in the area and complementing the civil works.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads have committed to ensuring that ongoing monitoring will take place to evaluate the environmental outcomes of the works.
