The 1918 Cyclone Story

The After the Storm project was made possible through SLQ Public Library Strategic Priorities Grant funding.

Funding allowed staff to engage a cinematographer to work with local Historians Berenice Wright and Terry Hayes and capture the story of the cyclone on a short film.

Below is a short promo of that film.  The film will be shown throughout the day at the exhibition in the Jubilee Community Centre from January 20 to February 16.

Council caught up with 105 year old Eileen Welsh for a chat about her experience from the 1918 Cyclone which almost wiped Mackay from the map. To commemorate the centenary of this natural disaster, council is presenting an exhibition at the Jubilee Community Centre. The exhibition is a joint initiative of our four regional museums and Mackay Regional Council Libraries. Images courtesy of Mackay Regional Council Library Service
