The Maker Movement is taking the world by storm. Here at Mackay Regional Council Libraries we have created opportunities for a variety of ages to explore their inner ‘maker’.
Mini MakerSpaces are targeted at young makers aged between 6 and 12 years. The sessions are designed to explore basic STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts and encourage problem solving and the exploration of ideas.
Robotics, which allows a focus on STEM learning, is the main focus of the MakerSpaces program aimed at 12 to 17 year olds. Running missions on Mars with Lego Mindstorm robots encourages team work and gives participants an opportunity to build and program robots using motors, sensors, gears, wheels and other technical components.
Thanks to funding from Friends of Mackay Libraries Inc. our library has six EV3 Mindstorm robots that come to ‘life’ during school holiday programs.
Programs using the robots Eva, Chip, Monty, Leia, Robbie and Dot are run during the school holidays. Activities are based heavily on Mars Missions, future robotics sessions will include a design and build focus in addition to robot programming.
Mackay Regional Council Library Service has links with MakerSpaces Mackay Inc providing direct access for people over 18 years to science and technology workshops. Visit the Makerspaces Mackay Inc website or follow them on Facebook!
