United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

We need to take action!

The United Nations developed 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.

The Mackay Regional Council Libraries each month will present a new goal that challenges our community to get into action in innovative and impactful ways.  We ask that you participate in the activities and attend each month’s movie that supports the goal.

Goal One: No Poverty

836 million people live in extreme poverty!

Food – it’s something many of us take for granted.  The harsh reality is that many residents of our region do go hungry and are unable to afford the ingredients of a simple meal.  It’s time we helped out!

You can drop off your food donations throughout the month of July to any of the following locations:

  • Dudley Denny City Library
  • Gordon White Library
  • Mirani Library
  • Mobile Library
  • Sarina Library
  • Walkerston Library

Movie Showing: The Bicycle Thief

The Bicycle Thief is a harrowing portrait of loss and depravation in post-war Rome. The Bicycle Thief is a simple but powerful movie about a man’s desperate bid for a job to provide for his family, as it is a potent mix of real life detail, detective story and poetic melodrama as a father (Lamberto Maggiorani) and his devoted son (Enzo Staiola) roam the streets of the capital in search of the bicycle that will deliver them from poverty.

Goal Two: Zero Hunger

Avoid throwing away food!

Over 1/3 of the world’s food is wasted.

It is time to rethink how we grow, share and consume our food. Each of us needs to explore what we really need to consume in order to reduce waste.  Here are things you can do during August to show your support in extinguishing hunger.

Movie Showing: Food Chains

There is more interest in food these days than ever. Yet, farmworkers who form the foundation of our fresh food industry are routinely robbed of wages. Food Chains exposes the human cost in our food supply of farmworkers in poverty and living in sublime conditions, and the complicity of the supermarket industry.
