Senior pets for senior people

Mackay Regional Council’s senior pets program is designed to find loving homes for older abandoned animals with a senior person.

It is typically harder to find homes for older animals. However, these pets are perfect for older people as they have lower energy levels and are better suited to their lifestyles.

Once council has exhausted all other options to find an animal a home council will contact those registered through the program to see if they’re interested in adopting it.

This will be offered free of charge and seniors will not have to pay for desexing, microchipping or registration fees.

Council will also try to match animals with seniors based on the preferences they look for in a pet.

Pets offer a number of benefits to seniors including:

  • Companionship
  • Improve physical and mental health
  • Help mobilise seniors through increased physical activity by taking their dog for a walk
  • Can reduce stress levels and lower blood pressure
  • Create routine in an older person’s life

By registering for this program you will also be helping to save a life.
