How to apply

To operate an Environmentally Relevant Activity (ERA) you are required to apply for a development approval and operators registration. You will need to submit a complete application to council. The following information will assist to ensure your application is complete and that you consider other applications that may be required for your business.

There are two steps you will need to undertake to obtain approval to conduct your ERA.

Step 1

Obtain development approval for the site. This will be assessed under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 (SPA) and the city's planning scheme. It is the ERA operators responsibility to obtain this approval with the property owner's consent.

All applications require development approval to conduct an ERA. This approval is required before the ERA Registration Certificate can be issued. Plans may be required for development approval.

Step 2

Obtain Operators Registration Certificate. This will be assessed under the Environmental Protection Act. It is the ERA operators responsibility to obtain this registration from council, the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) or Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI).
