Emergency management

Council proactively plans to reduce the impact on the community from disaster events such as SEScyclones, storm surges, floods, bushfires, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc.

The Disaster Management Act 2003 sets out the responsibilities of Local Governments during disasters.

Local Disaster Management Group, chaired by the Mayor manages and coordinates local and acquired external resources required to provide assistance to the community in response to an event.

Council has prepared a Disaster Management Plan and Operational Plans for use in the event of a disaster, to meet the following categories:

  • Preparedness
  • Response
  • Recovery

Disaster Readiness Checklisterilogo

It is important we do not become complacent as we head into another storm season. Why not complete the Disaster Readiness Checklist to see how well prepared you are in the event of a natural disaster. It provides information on managing hazards around the home, assessing disaster potential in local areas, emergency support channels, evacuation planning, emergency kits and developing community connections

Safe and Well Website

The Australian Red Cross have established under the National Registration and Inquiry System (NRIS) a Safe and Well website (http://emergency.redcross.org.au) and national telephone number.

During an emergency, registering with the NRIS can help people check you are safe and well, providing great peace of mind to your loved ones.

The NRIS service is launched during emergency situations to help people reconnect with family and friends.

The website and telephone number will be advertised during an emergency event.

This summer - If it's Flooded, Forget it.

If it's Flooded, Forget it is a advertising campaign to reduce the instances of people becoming either trapped, hurt or killed when driving, walking or playing in flooded waterways.  Each year valuable Emergency Service resources are tied up in rescuing people from flooded waterways that could have been avioded.

It is almost impossible to predict if flooded waterways are safe to enter.  The water can be much deeper than it appears on the surface and there may be debris or washouts which may not be seen from above.

Just 30cm of water is enough to float a vehicle leaving no tyre traction.  DO NOT RISK IT - Driving through floodwaters can result in your vehicle being overturned or swept away by the force of water and electronic doorlocks and windows may be disabled trapping occupants.

This summer - remember If it's Flooded, Forget it and Obey Road Closures.

Emergency Action Guide and Evacuation Zones

To assist in preparing for emergencies, the Local Disaster Management Group has produced an Emergency Action Guide for the region:

Disaster Response Levy

Council has adopted a Disaster Response Levy to ensure Council has the capability to meet its obligation in times of natural disaster.

Emergency Alert System

The State Government has announced that during times of emergencies such as bushfires and extreme weather events, your landline or mobile phone may now be used to deliver a critical warning.

This 'Emergency Alert' phone or text message is another way for authorities to inform you on what you may need to do.

If you don't understand the message, ask a family member, friend or neighbour for assistance.

You do not need to register for this service as it is based on the billing address of your telephone  or mobile service.

Learn more about this system at www.emergencyalert.gov.au

Sandbags

During the 2011/12 storm season, public access sand stockpiles to encourage residents to become more self-resilient by allowing residents fill their own sandbags have been located at 374 Shakespeare Street, West Mackay (next to the 122nd Cadet Unit Barracks) and near the North Mackay PCYC, corner of Scriha St and Norris Rd Playing Fields, North Mackay.

Residents are reminded that they should take along a shovel or something to assist them in filling their own sandbags.

Residents are advised that they may purchase hessian or poly weave sandbags from hardware stores or stockfeed premises, such as Blackwoods, Bunnings, Mitre 10, Porters or Farmyard Feeds Mackay (formerly Bagley Produce).

Council will only issue sandbags during a declared disaster event.
