Mayor raises a cuppa for the cause as giant mug arrives in Mackay

A giant Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea mug that has been travelling around the state to encourage people to pop on the kettle for the cause has arrived in Mackay and landed on Mayor Greg Williamson’s desk.

Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is enjoyed by more than a million people nationally each year.

Cr Williamson said Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea provided an opportunity for locals to gather together and help raise vital funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s work.

“Sadly, cancer affects everyone. In the Mackay region alone, around 780 people are diagnosed with cancer each year,” Cr Williamson said.

“I really do encourage people in our great city to rally their friends, family or colleagues and host a morning tea, as even raising a small amount will go a long way towards helping some of the most vulnerable in our community.”

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan thanked Cr Williamson for his support and joined him in encouraging locals to get involved with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

“We want to acknowledge the mayor’s enthusiasm for our work and helping us raise awareness by having the mug land on his desk,” Ms McMillan said.

He explained that the charity hoped by sending the giant Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea mug around the state and showcasing its journey on social media, using the hashtag #MugOnTheMove, more people would learn about the fundraising campaign.

The mug’s journey began on March 11.

“It’s a fun way to let more people know about Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and encourage Queensland communities to pop on the kettle and host their own event,” Ms McMillan said.

“With local support and fundraising, Cancer Council Queensland can continue to invest in lifesaving research, prevention programs and localised patient support services.”

The official date of Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is Thursday, May 23, 2019, but people can register to host an event anytime in May or June.
