Olympic sponsor goes in to bat for Sports Expo

Ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Optus has thrown its support behind Mackay’s Sports Expo and Sign-on Day as naming rights sponsor.

Having joined the Australian Olympic Committee’s Olympic Unleashed program as presenting sponsor earlier this year, the sponsorship deal with the Sport Expo will provide some exciting opportunities.

More than 100 Olympians, past and present, as well as athletes aspiring for Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022, are involved in the Olympic Unleashed program.

Mayor Greg Williamson welcomed Optus’s support and said it would bring some Olympic flavour to next year’s event.

“Optus is an official partner of the Australian Olympic team and the Australian Paralympic team until 2026, so to have them as our Gold Sponsor during an Olympic year is a really great fit,” Cr Williamson said.

Territory general manager Madonna Burgess said the decision was an exciting move for Optus.

“We are delighted to increase our support for the Sports Expo and Sign-on Day as the new naming rights sponsor for 2020,” Ms Burgess said.

“The annual sign-on day event is all about passing the baton to the younger generation and creating a healthy, active lifestyle which aligns closely with our own company goals,” she said.

The Sports Expo and Sign-on Day will be held at the MECC on Sunday, February 9, 2020.

Applications for sporting clubs to take part in the event are still open but will close shortly.

The Sports Expo is expanding into both foyers of the MECC in 2020, with more than 7000 people expected to attend.

It is the largest sport and recreation sign-on day in our region.
