Construction is set to begin on stages one and two of the Camilleri Street District Park Masterplan in the next few weeks.

Mayor Greg Williamson, Julieanne Gilbert MP and Project Sk8Park’s Flynn Bushell turned the first sod today (Monday, May 13) to mark the start of the work.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the project would double the size of the popular Blacks Beach park, making it the biggest and most diverse park in the Northern Beaches.

“We are glad to be starting work on this highly anticipated project,” he said.

“In 2016, Flynn Bushell and Ethan Laval of Project Sk8Park began campaigning for a skatepark at Blacks Beach.

“Since then, council has constructed the $2.2 million state-of-the art Sugar Bowl Mackay skatepark in North Mackay and we are pleased to provide yet another exciting wheeled-sports facility for the region, with the help of State Government funding.”

The upgrades will build on existing infrastructure, such as the current playground, while catering to a wider range of ages.

New additions as part of stages one and two of the Camilleri Street District Park Masterplan include:

  • A youth hub, featuring a skate park and pump track, a half basketball court and hit-up wall
  • New public amenities
  • Boardwalk and footpath connectivity from Barber Drive to Camilleri Street car park
  • Additional shelters, an electric BBQ, picnic tables and bench seats
  • Water bubbler and rubbish bins
  • Dog park

Construction of the youth hub component of the project is scheduled to start in late July and work will be carried out by Convic Pty Ltd.

All work is expected to be completed by November, weather permitting. For more details visit connectingmackay.com.au.

This project is jointly funded between Mackay Regional Council and the Queensland Government who helped fund the project through a $1 million election commitment.
