Two five-year strategies have been endorsed by council to continue driving the region’s future economic growth.

At today’s ordinary meeting, councillors adopted the Economic Development Strategy 2020-2025 and Mackay Region Events Strategy 2020-2025.

Mayor Greg Williamson said extensive consultation was undertaken to develop both strategy documents.

“Hundreds of interviews were held with key stakeholders, along with an open public consultation period to allow for general feedback from the wider community,” he said.

“The strategies reflect the Mackay region – diverse, innovative, forward-thinking and full of exciting opportunities.”

In summary, the Economic Development Strategy identifies a vision of encouraging sustainable and diversified job and investment in the region.

The Mackay Region Events Strategy outlines a vision for the region to be recognised as a leading events destination.

Mayor Williamson said within each strategy document there is a clear framework outlining specific initiatives that are to be implemented and/or considered over the next five years.

“Having strategies like these in place helps council to deliver a coordinated approach in making decisions,” he said.

“For example, the Events Strategy (2020-2025) will guide council in the acquisition and support of events as well as increase our collaboration with key stakeholders in the events and tourism industry.”
