Character Heritage Advisory Committee calls for nominations

Published: 01 Jul 2020

Council is keen to hear from locals who are passionate about our region’s heritage.

Nominations for council’s Character Heritage Advisory Committee (CHAC) community members are now open.

Council welcomes participation from interested groups, industry partners and individuals across the region.

Chair of the committee, Cr Fran Mann said the committee identified heritage issues and opportunities and advised council on all historical and cultural matters for the region.

“The committee was established to support and commit to the conservation of the region by researching local history, assist with heritage issues and help organise events such as heritage walks and the annual heritage awards,” Cr Fran Mann said.

“The Character and Heritage Advisory Committee assisted Sarina Arts and Crafts Centre to produce a pamphlet for a self-guided heritage walk in Sarina. This pamphlet is similar to the heritage walk brochures council has for the Mackay City Centre and Mackay Cemetery,” she said.

“We also organised the 1918 Cyclone Survivors Heritage Homes Bus Tour in 2018 which visited the four historic Mackay homes that survived the 1918 cyclone.”

The community is now invited to nominate for membership.

The membership period is for two years, until July 2022. Meetings are held quarterly, usually at the Jubilee Community Centre or nearby heritage facilities.

To nominate, simply visit www.mackay.qld.gov.au/heritagecommittee and fill out the nomination form explaining why you would like to be a CHAC member.

Nominations close on Thursday, July 16, and successful members will be advised via email by Wednesday, July 22, 2020.

Previous CHAC members are welcome to re-nominate.

The first meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, August 7, 2020 at the Jubilee Community Centre.
