Council dives into digital engagement

Council staff are becoming stars of the small screen as the organisation moves to engage with residents in the digital realm.

Through the Stay Home, Stay Connected program, council is working across departments and facilities to create content that residents can enjoy in their own home.

The program covers everything from popular library children’s sessions to Artspace artist talks and virtual exhibitions, gardening tips from council’s nursery team and assorted expert content to support residents’ mental and physical health.

You can view the program at mackay.qld.gov.au/stayconnected and be sure to check back regularly, as new content is constantly being added.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the aim was to provide some normality to families who might be missing the services and programs council provided.

“Using social media and council’s Connecting Mackay platform, there is an exciting opportunity to engage and communicate with residents who might feel isolated,” Cr Williamson said.

“We want to encourage questions and answers, challenge residents to undertake projects and create a connected online community,” he said.

“Artspace Mackay has already posted its first online artist talk, an interview between art-collector Ros Jones and Artspace Mackay director Tracey Heathwood.

“Ros Jones was online and available to answer everyone’s questions when the video was posted, and more than 50 people were able to engage with her.

“The Libraries have also been blown away with the audience response to their Baby Bounce, Toddler Time and Story Time sessions.  Parents have even been sending in photos of their kids playing along at home to the videos and doing the actions.”

Cr Williamson said the program was constantly evolving and would address serious issues like mental health and talking with children about the virus.

“We are working with local professionals in the recovery space to produce some content for residents dealing with the impacts of isolation,” Cr Williamson said.  “Those experts will then be available to answer questions through our engagement channels.”
