Libraries sell off excess books for a dollar

Published: 09 Mar 2020

Residents will be able buy a bag of books for less than the price of a large coffee at Mackay Regional Council Libraries’ mega book sale.

It will be the Libraries’ first book sale in four years and will take place at Gordon White Library.

The sale starts on Friday, March 13 from 9am to 5.30pm and continues Saturday, March 14 from 9am to 2pm while stocks last.

Thousands of excess books (two storage sheds worth) will be offered for sale for a fraction of their retail price.

Community and Client Services acting director Angela Hays said Libraries carried multiple copies of popular titles and once those titles were no longer in high demand they were removed from circulation.

“From then, they just take up valuable storage space,” Ms Hays said.

“We’ve got thousands of copies that need a new home, so we are encouraging keen readers to come down with a big bag and pick up some bargains,” she said.

“All books will be just $1 and by helping us make room, you will be opening up space for us to get new items in.

“There’s a great range on offer, with everything from bestsellers to books on gardening, craft and cooking.

“Book sales like this are a wonderful, sustainable way that we can offer readers a great deal while also having a bit of a clean-up – it’s a win, win.”

Bargain-hunters are asked to bring their own bags and cash.
