New wave of athletes to hit the ARC

Mackay will again play host to the Little Athletics Nordic Sport North Queensland Regional Championships.

This year the event will be held at the state-of-the-art venue, Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex (ARC) on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6.

Mayor Greg Williamson said it had been a challenging year for everyone in the community, but it was pleasing to see sporting events still being held in our region.

“With so many events cancelled this year and also the challenge of home schooling, it has been a very turbulent time for young people in our region,” Cr Williamson said.

“Holding sporting events like these brings a sense of normal back to young people’s lives and we are so excited to be holding this event at our amazing sporting venue - Mackay ARC.”

Event organiser, Simon Cook said competitors and organisers alike were excited to be competing at such a premier venue.

“This is the first Little Athletics Queensland event to be held at the new regional athletics facility in Mackay,” Mr Cook said.

“We’re delighted to be bringing Little Athletics to the region particularly as we come out of tough COVID restrictions,” he said.

“We inspected the facility soon after completion and agreed it would make an excellent regional facility for Little Athletics Queensland events.

“That’s why we’re so excited to be ‘back on track’ and hosting this event here in Mackay.

“The local organising committee are very proud of the facility and we’ve been working closely with them to ensure the athletes compete in an event with an enjoyable and friendly atmosphere away from the pressures of everyday life at the moment.”

These events are made possible thanks to council’s Invest Mackay Events Attraction Program.

Council wishes all participants a successful event.
