New Year’s offers a ride through the musical lands of Broadway

Tickets, which are free, became available today via the MECC website.

For three hours, from 6pm to 9pm, families can enjoy crowd-favourite songs performed by Mackay Musical Comedy Players.

The group will perform hits from Wicked and Hairspray and songs like Over the Rainbow by none other than Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.

The audience will be taken on a ride from one musical land to the next.

The songs will be sung by some of Mackay's most talented singers and actors, many of which have won awards for their past performances.

Mayor Greg Williamson said this year’s New Year’s Eve event was different from council’s usual celebration at Bluewater Quay.

“Unfortunately, there wasn’t a way to make that event COVID-safe, but the MECC team have put together an amazing night of free family entertainment to be held in the MECC Auditorium,” Mayor Williamson said.

“This will be a ticketed event, to allow for contact tracing, but tickets will be free,” he said.

“Numbers are limited, so please get in early and book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”

Local musicians Folks Like Us and Jade Fiyen have also been enlisted to wow audiences with their soulful voices and instrumental talents.

More entertainment is expected to be announced in coming weeks.
