Council gears up for its best show display yet

Council's Mackay Show display has shifted up a few gears this year.

The Mackay Regional Council display has moved locations to a higher profile space – the ground floor of the 500 Pavilion.

The Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike Trails project will be the centrepiece, with visitors able to check their speed as they ride a bike in front of an interactive big screen.

There will also be an opportunity to enter a prize draw to win a bike and accessories, valued at $800.

Mayor Greg Williamson said council was excited about this year’s display in a new location, with plenty of passing foot traffic.

“Following a hiatus last year due to COVID, the Mackay Show, including our popular show display, is back this week,’’ he said.

“The main feature is an interactive mountain bike game allowing people to ride mountain bike trails while tracking their speed on the digital screen.

“Mackay Cycles are a sponsor for display and have helped us organise a great competition prize, with a mountain bike, helmet, backpack, gloves and water bottle up for grabs.

“To enter, visitors simply need to fill in a digital entry at the council display and tell us in 30 words or less what they love about the region.”

Second prize for the competition will be a family pass to NQ’s Rock’n Country festival at Mackay Showgrounds in August.

Mayor Williamson said #mackaypride was again the theme for this year’s council show display.

“That ties in well with our Platform program, which will feature local musicians performing on stage,’’ he said.

“The Platform program helps young musicians launch their careers and develop their talents, and we’re excited to be able to showcase them as part of our display.

There will also be interactive booths featuring Water and Waste Services, the MECC, Libraries, Mackay Natural Environment Centre, Sarina Sugar Shed, Capital Works, Local Laws, Mackay ARC, Mackay Waterfront, Strategic Planning and others.

Mackay Gold Coast Suns AFL women’s player Lauren Bella will also make an appearance at the council display tomorrow (Tuesday, June 15).

Mackay Show hours are 9am to 10pm tomorrow (Tuesday, June 15) and Wednesday (June 16) and 9am to 4pm on the public holiday Thursday (June 17).
