Council to chip in for Christmas events

Published: 29 Sep 2021

Money doesn’t buy happiness at Christmas – but $750 helps to put a few more snags on the barbecue!

From this week, community groups and not-for-profits are eligible to apply for $10,000 worth of Christmas Grants from council, up to the value of $750.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the Christmas Grants program was a perfect way for local not-for-profits to boost their festive events.

“These grants have always been popular amongst progress associations and service clubs and are a great way for us to spread some Christmas cheer in small rural communities during the festive season,” Mayor Williamson said.

“The Mackay region covers 7622km2, so rather than spend all of our Christmas budget on a big Mackay-centric event, these grants allow us to chip in for celebrations that are more accessible for residents living in regional areas,” he said.

“Carols, concerts, fairs, parties and parades – council is happy to support anything that really involves local communities and is fully inclusive.

“Council understands that COVID-19 regulations have also made holding events more expensive, so hopefully these grants can help to cover some of those extra costs.

“Applications are currently open and are only limited by your imagination.”

Applications close midnight, Friday, October 22, 2021.
