Creative ideas wanted for our public spaces

The grants program, which is now open, was established in 2018 with the intention to empower communities to create places where people feel connected.

Mayor Greg Williamson said to date the program had supported a number of big-ticket projects such as the Slade Point Water Tower mural and Fifth Lane revitalisation.

“More recently, Mackay Hospital Foundation secured $5000 to put towards a mural for their Indigenous meeting place and healing garden at Mackay Base Hospital,” Mayor Williamson said.

“The mural, which is set be unveiled later this year, will be developed to support and preserve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language, arts and culture.

“Additionally, the outdoor sanctuary will create a culturally safe place for Indigenous visitors to gather, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to mourn and patients to retreat to.”

The AMP! program can fund up to 80 per cent of a project’s budget, with applications closing April 26, 2021.

Mayor Williamson revealed that council was wanting to hear ideas on pop-up installations, community gardens or events that showcase the region’s unique community.

“Communities with a strong sense of place have a unique attractiveness, which can encourage people to live, work, play and visit our region,” he said.

Applications must be completed and submitted via Smarty Grants. Grant funds are competitive and will be awarded to applications that best meet the assessment criteria.
